Tears On The Street

There have been more than 200 mass shootings across the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed. Their figures include shootings that happen in homes and in public places

The weeping goes on unabated
Your streets are awash with tears
While mothers morn their children
Far passed the question why?
With lovers cradling copses
Hope dying in their arms
Pain seems endemic
Your streets are washed with blood
But your ability to accept this
Is highlighted by your press
Maybe if death visited your home
If you’d held her body in your arms
Whilst hope puddled on the floor
You’d find it in your heart
To forsake your God given entitlement
To no longer bear the tools of your aggression
The symbols of your constitutional right
You’d curtail your claim to freedom
No longer sacrificing your children
To the Baal of this age
There’s blood on the altar
And it’s no longer sheep and goats
Realise you’ve forsaken
The god you claim to worship
And made something else divine
You’ve rewritten your scriptures
To affirm the lives you live
Next time you talk of divine judgement
Please consider it might not fall where you expect
Oh Lord, Lord save the children
