The Candle

Flickering flame
Pulsing,
Sputtering life
And dancing
Always dancing,
Bent by breeze,
Reaching up
To cast shadows
Oversized
There and gone
And back,
As flame flares
Spits from wax
Receding
Shadows fall
Dwindle,
As dance declines
Light retreats
Breath is held
Then released
With luminosity renewed
So fragile
So persistent
So,
Mesmerising?
Will the flame
Outlive the candle?
