Virginity

There are many virgins in the world,
Inexperience disguised as plausible innocence
Holding back possible experience,
Pushing back against progress,
Against the enrichment of our lives.
Life is put off and time is lost,
Fear, that impostor
Becomes entrenched and grows,
It’s grip increasing the denial
Of enriching lives.

And you?
You think of the giving of a body,
Me?
I’m thinking of the giving of a mind,
The education of emotions,
The doing of things not yet done
In so many areas of life.

Sex?
I hope you have fun,
But there are so many other taboos
To be broken,
So much life to give oneself too
That our canvas may be bright
No longer monochrome.
No longer say virgin
For virginity has been mis-sold,
Packaged as an end in itself
And not as the beginning of the future.
