Monday Musings

Dear Pogue,

My reading, like this study of Love that we’ve started, has led my mind into distant places and dusty, cobweb immeshed corners. In my thoughts I’m opening hidden doors down secluded passageways and watching lingering sunsets in a way I don’t think I’ve done before. And I’m filling my notebook with all sorts of things as they cross my pathway. Let me start your week with one such entry. A few lines from W.H.Auden, a journeyman on the continent on the human spirit.

How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.

That’s the thought, the sentiment that we will carry into this week, “Let the more loving one be me”, which at first sight sounds indulgent or selfish but is actually as far removed from selfishness as can be. Love is about surrender, about release, about giving. It’s a generous spirit and some.

So this week, quiet your spirit, and watch yourself. Watch your thoughts, watch your reactions but most of all be gentle with yourself because that’s where selfless love starts, that’s where a gentle spirit originates. Treat yourself in the best possible way you can imagine and let everything flow out from there.

  1. Yes, that kind of love is not a selfish love, it pure and clean and without want. It’s exactly how Christ loves us. And He never fails at it as we do. Often I start out loving that way but when it is not given to me in the same way I become discouraged. It’s because I look for divine love from earthly people like myself. Think you are onto something there Wic.
