As The Old Lady Knows

What if,
As the old lady knows,
“All that glitters is gold”
And she really is
“Buying a stairway to heaven”?

Now what if
The stairway goes not up?
Which down the ages was taught,
Instead it goes down
And heaven’s a decent?
All the wishful thoughts of the years
Are no more than just that
And wise people are deceived
For heaven is not bought with our deeds
Or the accumulation of wealth
Well earned reputations are as nought
Even our wisdom falls short
On its very best of days?

What if popes are all paupers?
If kings hold no sway?
That the descent makes all equal
As the children well know
It will tear at our misbelief
The error that men promote
And lay bear self engrandizement
So each is known as they are
The hiding places of illusion
Will be as smoke on the wind
Then in nakedness our eyes finally opened
To see heaven all about
Now, not tomorrow,
Not a prize to be won
Nor a place for the few
But here all around
The inheritance right

What if the climb was a fable
Promoted by wrong sighted men
All we can do is a hinderance
Blinding our way
So look down not upwards
Give up your quest
For now is the time
To take what you came for
Yes, this is your day!
