Sleep went to town this night
Choosing not to return
And I lay and ask
Have I been betrayed by sleep?
Is the tenuous relationship we shared
Finally fractured?
Have I been betrayed in favour of another?
More attractive maybe
More generous in thanks
Or a body more consuming
Who even now lays
Wrapped for just this night
In Elysian’s consuming embrace
At peace and free
From the burden of the day
Free to travel unhindered
Unfettered
To places held in dreams
And I?
I am shackled to the noises of the night
To the reoccurring thoughts
The torment of a restless mind
Desperately seeking escape
The door to go beyond
Beyond consciousness
Escape
I’d take parole until the dawn returns
If it meant time spent in rest
